"Alternative medicine is basically a philosophical difference, predicated on the view that the body can heal," says Keith Scott-Mumby, MB, ChB, MD, PhD, FRCP, professor of nutrition at the Open International University for Complementary Medicines. "For instance, with arthritis, conventionally you prescribe analgesics. Alternative medicine would say, maybe you can see some recovery if you change your diet, add nutrients and unburden yourself emotionally."
Regarding cancer, Dr. Scott-Mumby, who also runs a website at www.wholesomelivingletter.com, says, "The idea of alternative medicine versus standard or chemotherapy/radiation is hotly debated. But alternative medicine is not a one-or-other choice. For cancer, you can use alternative therapies to improve the outcome. I wouldn't discourage regular therapies, but it's sensible for your wife to use alternative therapies to protect her from side effects. Why not combine them to get the best of both?"
And the best time to start alternative therapies, says Dr. Scott-Mumby, is now. "Cancer is a wake-up call; it says you need to take your health issues in hand immediately. There's a saying about cancer alternatives: Any good health measure is an anti-cancer measure. Exercise, get fit, clean up emotional issues, fight back. This can't help but benefit your wife's body."
