My So-Called (Caregiver) Life

Debbie and her dad

Alaskan Debbie Newsham is a first-prize winner of Caring Today's 2006 "Give a Caregiver a Break" essay contest. She was "called into action" when her mother developed end-stage liver failure and was no longer able to care for Debbie's father (who has Alzheimer's) and grandmother (who was in a nursing home). Now, with help from her husband and three children, Debbie cares for her dad while holding down a job and serving as an advocate for caregiver rights and services, including her work with AGENET (Alaska Geriatric Exchange Network), a coalition of providers of adult daycare, nursing homes, assisted-living facilities and more. Top 10: Handling Stress

Submitted by Debbie on 2007, November 12 - 09:36.

To be honest, I've been feeling a little stressed lately. But stress can be a pretty sneaky thing. There you are, going through life, thinking you have it all under control, and bam! The trick is to learn the warning signs and circumvent in the inevitable.

Top Ten Signs You're Not Handling Stress So Well

10. As you enter your house, the dog hides and you hear bedroom doors slamming shut

9. You feel that a perfectly reasonable response to "Hi, how are you?" is "Fine, what business is it of yours?"

8. Your food pyramid, from top to bottom, becomes nicotine, caffeine, sugar and chocolate

7. You notice your socks don't match, which means they haven't for three days

6. You just want to see your favorite 3 a.m. infomercial...one more time

5. Your retail therapy has developed into a personal relationship with several sales clerks--and they have the embarrassing habit of genuflecting when you enter the shop

4. You cry at weddings, commercials, sitcoms, because the dishes didn't get quite as clean as you would like, the grass is too green, the grass is not green enough....

3. You go to the neighborhood grocery store and the employees draw lots to see who gets "lucky" enough to help you and collect the associated hazardous-duty pay

2. Deadlines come, deadlines go........

1. Ice cream for dinner...again?

So when the stress monster hits--and it will hit and hit hard--you have to fight back. One of the best ways? Getting a little help from Caring Today (smiles). Seriously, check out the stress busters under "Just for You," then take a bubble bath while reading something fun, then look outside and see what a beautiful day it is. Rejoice that it is another day to spend with our loved one.
