Caregiver Gift-giving

The Alzheimer's Association reminds us that about 5 million Americans have Alzheimer's—and that almost 10 million people are caring for someone with the disease. So what can you do this holiday season that will make these caregivers happy while also being helpful? Well, with the help of the Alzheimer's Association, we provide the following ideas we feel are great for all caregivers.

The Gift of Time: Provide self-made coupons the caregiver can cash in with friends and relatives. Include offerings for a meal to be prepared, laundry to be done, the house to be cleaned, the lawn to be mowed or the drive to be shoveled. Or just offer to sit in for the person for a while so he or she can get a little respite, maybe go shopping or see a movie. Time for oneself is a great stress reducer, making it a great gift for any caregiver.

Gift Certificates: Asking someone what he or she would like can actually add anxiety to the caregiver's life—it's just another decision to be made for someone else. Think of something you know the caregiver enjoys—books, movies, restaurants, a special store—and present a gift certificate from there to allow the caregiver to select what he or she wants or needs. Remember, dry-cleaning services, car repair, home maintenance are also things this caregiver could use.

Books: Fiction might offer the caregiver a great little escape. Non-fiction, whether it's about caregiving or another topic in which the caregiver is interested, can offer assistance and education. For a list of books Caring Today has recommended, click here.

Videos and Music: A favorite movie or album, maybe a collected season of a favorite TV show, all make for relaxing and stress-reducing pleasure that can be enjoyed at times of the caregiver's choosing.
