ARTHRITIS: KNOW YOUR MEDS

Understanding supplements

BY:MYRA DEMBROW

Among substances that may fall into the category of "established and novel" treatments are the supplements glucosamine and chondroitin. While their effectiveness continues to be reviewed, there is little evidence that they cause any harm and millions of people continue to buy them.

The Arthritis Foundation, however, cautions that they're not for everyone:

-Don't take glucosamine and chondroitin if you're allergic to shellfish

-As its name implies, glucosamine is a form of sugar (glucose), so use caution and consult with your doctor if you have diabetes

-Both glucosamine and chondroitin can cause blood thinning; don't use them without first consulting with your doctor if you take blood-thinning medication

-These drugs may not be appropriate for children, pregnant women or women who may become pregnant
