HAVING AN EFFECT ON YOUR SEX LIFE?

Associating diabetes with erectile dysfunction...and what can be done about it

Having diabetes will change your life. From altering your diet and exercise regimen to monitoring glucose levels and taking meds, your lifestyle will be affected. Fact is, diabetes' effects could extend into your bedroom.

Many of the more than 18 million American men with erectile dysfunction, for instance, have diabetes. And, after reviewing a survey of more than 2,100 men, a research team at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health found that more than half the men who said they had diabetes also reported erectile dysfunction. The researchers, as reported in their study published in the American Journal of Medicine, also found a strong link between cardiovascular disease and impotence.

But, you can do something about it. Says Elizabeth Selvin, a postdoctoral fellow at Johns Hopkins University, "If you control your diabetes...and your blood pressure and cholesterol levels, you'll also improve sexual function."
