OSTEOPOROSIS: CAREGIVER TIPS
Here are eight things to keep in mind...including making time for yourself.

As the caregiver for someone with osteoporosis, your job is to provide encouragement and support, while protecting your loved one from hazards that could cause more fractures. You may also have to help manage pain, coordinate a daily exercise regimen and ensure that meals are healthy and calcium-rich.
Here are some tips:
- Prevent falls by making simple adjustments in the home. All areas of the home, especially hallways and stairwells, should be well lighted.
- Remove scatter rugs and wayward electric cords, and install grab bars in the tub as well as inside and outside the shower.
Provide your loved one with low-heeled, non-slip shoes. - Help schedule time for exercise. Weight-bearing exercises, such as walking and stair-climbing, help to build bone, and strength-training exercises promote muscle development.
- Watch for constipation caused by certain calcium supplements. If this becomes a problem, increase water consumption or offer a fiber supplement. Calcium phosphate and calcium citrate are less constipating.
- Discourage smoking and excess consumption of alcohol and caffeine.
- Don't ignore pain. Left untreated, chronic pain can reduce mobility and cause more pain. Report any severe or long-lasting pain to the doctor.
- Know the possible side effects of medications for osteoporosis, as some of these can be severe. Discuss concerns with the health care provider.
- Take time for yourself. As the sole cheerleader and caregiver, you may feel overwhelmed some days. At times like these, it's important to reach out to other family members or friends for support and assistance.
