PLAYING THROUGH THE PAIN
Don't let arthritis prohibit your loved one from enjoying favorite activities
BY:ALLISON CHRISTY HOOVER
For example, in a University of Kansas study that examined the effects of leisure activities on arthritis, participants who played the piano for 20 minutes four times a week found an overall increase in their range of motion, as well as a decrease in discomfort experienced on a daily basis. With a little modification, your loved one with arthritis can continue enjoying life while maintaining or improving general strength, grip strength and range of motion.
Below are a few tips from the Arthritis Foundation to help your loved one modify his or her lifestyle:
Gardening: Encourage the use of tools with large, ergonomic handles that are more sympathetic to the grip. Make a gift of a low-maintenance flowering plant that requires little care
Cooking: Stock the pantry with jars with easy-to-grip lids and handles, lightweight and easily accessible tools, and freezer bags with zipping closures for simple storage
Exercise: Join your loved one for a fresh-air activity like walking or swimming. And talk to your loved one's doctor about range-of-motion exercises, such as opening and closing fingers or rocking hips from side to side
Travel: Help your loved one plan a trip where arthritis worries are minimized. This may include avoiding long car trips and cramped airplane rides
Entertainment: Assist in planning a simple and enjoyable dinner party. Encourage cooking with pre-cut veggies to eliminate potentially painful prep, or have a potato or ice cream bar at which guests prepare courses on their own
