4 WORDS TO CHANGE YOUR LIFE

Learn the phrase to help you through difficult situations.

BY:MARY ELIZABETH TERZELLA

When you are in a difficult situation, dwelling on unanswerable—and upsetting—questions such as “What are we going to do if this treatment fails?” will only make matters worse.

To stop your mind from taking you down this scary and unproductive path, tell yourself, “I won’t go there,” advises Richard Carlson, PhD, in Easier Than You Think. “Those four simple words can change your life,” he says.

4 Words to change your life

I don't care for elderly parents yet. But I'm 51 and have 2 daughter 21 & 26 with physical and mental special needs. They are on about a 2nd grade level. One is fed through a feeding tube. They go to a day program but when they come home someone has to be with them all the time to keep them safe (they wouldn't know how or be able to get out of the house in case of a fire, etc.). The last 10 years I've had chronic suicidal depression. To me things are "all or nothing". I go from I can't handle this anymore so I think I'll commit suicide. So basically my therapist told me last week- Those four words "I won't go there". To not think of suicide as an option anymore. (It's like a recovering alcoholic having a bottle of booze around 'just in case'). So I'll have to remember those 4 words, "I won't go there" when those thoughts arise. Thank you.

Guilty about wanting to give up

I was on disability when my then 84 year old mother fell and injured her spinal cord. She has been bed ridden ever since, unable to walk, stand or roll over in bed. I made her a promise to take care of her to keep her out of a nursing home. 5 years later, at age 89, her condition has not improved and I am still taking care of her alone. She has a aide come in weekday mornings, but that's it. I feel tired most of the time. I also feel trapped, lonely and guilty. Feels like my life has been on hold all this time and now I have this strong urge to move on. I want to work again, have a life again. But then I remember what I promised her, and I start to feel guilty. Her mind is still sharp and alert, and she feels she will walk again some day. I'm not sure how to cope any more.
