"Play two songs and call me in the morning."If you have a progressive doctor, music may be part of your prescription—with good reason. An estimated 60 to 90 percent of all visits to primary-care physicians are for stress-related problems. What's more, studies show music has the power to ease pain and anxiety, even under very stressful circumstances, such as before and after major surgery.
Anything that captures your attention—from Strauss to Springsteen—can take your mind off your cares and calm you down. But your best bet may be to play music from your favorite musical category—not your favorite tunes, says Alicia Ann Clair, PhD, professor and director of the music therapy program at the University of Kansas. "Familiar songs conjure up memories that may cloud the relaxation response."
